MarBlo, Day 9 (Part II)

As I wrote in my last post, I just finished watching Blue Velvet for the first time. It was thoroughly disturbing, but there were some parts that just made me laugh. There might be spoilers in this one, so if you haven't seen it yet (what the fuck is wrong with you? It's been out since 1986! Laura Dern is in it!), click onwards.

Things That Made Me Chuckle in Blue Velvet:

1. Multiple "Dramatic Chipmunk" moments - one quick zoom in on the LINCOLN street sign, complete with thrilling upswing in music theme, actually made me laugh out loud.
2. The ritualistic rape scene. I know that sounds wrong. But I thought going into it that Frank was huffing helium, so I was imagining him grunting and screaming at her in a tiny leprechaun voice.
3. The hat that the son wears at the very end. I imagine that it's very hard and unforgiving on a toddler's brainsuit, and the fact that the mother finds this amusing is weirdly hilarious.
4. Laura Dern's run - EXACTLY the same flailing gait she has in Jurassic Park when she's trying to get away from the raptors...I actually sighed fondly and thought, "I bet she throws like a girl, too."
5. Kyle MacLachlan's haircut hasn't changed in twenty years. Given, he's a guy so he may not have had a lot to work with, but I think one of those New Wave haircuts with one side shaved and the other long would have looked faaaabulous on him back then.

I must admit, I've only seen bits and pieces of Blue Velvet, but I felt compelled to comment anyway.

Laura Dern is honest-to-God one of the most avian-looking people I've ever seen. She's just built like an ostrich in my eyes. The way she runs, stands, slumps when she sits...it just all screams "I was Big Bird's stunt double!" Have you seen We Don't Live Here Anymore? She's in it. She's good, too. And, I have a massive gay thing for Mark Ruffalo.

OK, Kyle Maclachlan. Have you seen him recently? He has aged about as well as an open bottle of beer in 100% heat. It's amazing. I didn't think you could age that poorly.

Finally, "dramatic chipmunk" moments make me simultaneously happy and sad to be alive.

That's it!
